Native American Tribes
One major tribe in the New Jersey Colony was the Lenni Lenape, which means "original people." At the time when European's arrived, there were approximately 40 bands of the Lenni Lanape on the Delaware River. These people all spoke a dialect based upon the Algonquian language. The people depended on farming, hunting, and fishing to survive. The communal nature of the Native American society, resulted in many misunderstandings between the European's and the Natives.
